Synopsis
Melbourne and North Brighton were linked as early as 1859. The line was extended to Brighton Beach in 1861 and to Sandringham in 1887. The Sandringham line, along with the one to Essendon, was the first railway in Australia to be electrified. This took place in 1919. By contrast the hand gates at New St between Brighton Beach and Hampton stations were the last of their kind on the Melbourne network. They were eventually abolished in 2007 when the level crossing was closed. It was reopened in 2013 with boom gates. The book traces the development of the line, passenger usage, accidents and the recommendation in the 1980 Lonie Report that it be closed. The railway survived and has had something of a revival in patronage in recent times.
