Synopsis
When Robert Newton retired from La Trobe University he took the opportunity to investigate an extraordinary collection of family papers lent to him in the hope that he would bring to life the stories dormant in them.

Over the years he wrote a series of essays, now in book form, hoping that others might agree with biographer Michael Holroyd’s dictate “...that we pay a compliment to the dead by keeping them in employment to assist the living.”

A Feast of Stephens is the third of these books and tells the stories of his Stephen ancestors. These include 6 James Stephens, the first of whom was alleged to have been a smuggler and the fifth a member of the Clapham Sect, so important in the 19th Century anti-slavery movement. Robert’s father, Sir Wilberforce Stephen Newton, was named after two of the key Sect members.
The Stephens migrated to Australia and provide a rich and varied addition to Australian history.
