Synopsis
'Killing TAFE. Keating's Training Reform Agenda, 1989-1996 is my new book'. By blind chance it followed from being asked to write something of my time in the Canberra Branch of the AEU. It begins with my time prior to becoming a teacher – a wild ride from lumping timber, milking cows, organising for B.A. Santamaria, cleaning windows high in the sky, studying for the Catholic Priesthood, and gaining an M.A. at University of Melbourne. And marrying Margaret. All of which was followed by an equally chaotic time moving from school to school. How did Margaret put up with me??
Much of the book analyses my time as Federal TAFE President of the AEU which coincided with Paul Keating's neo-liberal Training Reform Agenda which changed public TAFE to this day. Sharan Burrow, Australia's most famous trade unionist and Federal President of the AEU, asked me to tell Paul Keating, Prime Minister in 1996 that his competition policy was killing TAFE. You will have to read the book to find out what he said.
