Synopsis
This book is a supplement to the series of four family history volumes which Robert wrote largely from the extraordinary family papers he had been lent, in the hope that he would do something to tell the stories that lay dormant amongst them. It contains two diaries. The first is an illustrated diary of a walking tour in North Wales undertaken  by Robert’s great-grandfather, William Ravenscroft Stephen, in 1848.  Raven, as he was known, and his two parents, Sir George Stephen and his wife Henrietta, née Ravenscroft, were all keen amateur painters. Robert has annotated this diary.
Robert’s father’s war diary is the second one. It begins on the 14th of April 1915, “Ye commencement of ye great adventure.  Sailed 3 p.m. Port Melbourne” and finishes “Oh hell, who would be a soldier.” Wilberforce Stephen Newton, known as Bill, and who later became Sir Wilberforce, was one of Kitchener’s Hundred, the Australian doctors commissioned in 1915 into the British Army,  to join the English doctors in The Royal Army Medical Corps in France during the First World War.
