Synopsis
‘Penneys of Waratah’ is the story of the ancestors of two sisters Barbara and Leticia Newett, who with their two brothers grew up in Hampton, Victoria during the 1950s and 60s. Family research took them back to the Collins expedition which sailed from Portsmouth harbour in Hampshire, England in 1803 to Sullivan’s Bay in Sorrento Victoria, then to the southern-most tip of Tasmania to the first settlement in Van Diemen’s Land at Hobart. The story was featured briefly in a previous book of mine entitled ‘A twist in every tale’ published in 2013.

Followers of Tasmania’s early history will know the story of the Collins expedition and the Kearley family well. George Kearley, a private in the Royal Marines and his wife Mary Cook came with an expedition to Australia in order to start a new life in the untamed land, and with their help and that of their descendants began to populate the new Tasmania.

George and Mary Kearley were the sisters’ 4th great grandparents.

For a different spin on this story I have written it as though I was living it.
