Synopsis
'Dear Alessandra' is the humourous story about Mr. Brown, a resident in a Melbourne, Australia retirement village who replies to a young Italian woman's email message seeking romance and money.
The young girl Mr. Brown is supposedly corresponding with tries to fit a life of her own in with a mother who is suffering from the effects of stroke and who eventually dies in a fire at her aged care home. Her sister, is mostly on the sideline of the story, but nevertheless becomes an important character as it comes to an end. To protect their identities they both write under assumed names.
Mr. Brown wins a large prize in lotto and he and his wife travel to England to visit family and then to Italy where he coincidently meets Antonia who is Alessandra's twin sister, a nun.
The story ends with a surprising twist when the main characters meet in Florence.
The book, as well as being an amusing (virtual) romance and a travel story, provides insight into domestic life and the lives of those having to looking after parents who can no longer care for themselves.
