Synopsis
BEFORE the 1958 League Grand Final between Collingwood and Melbourne, the Sun newspaper published the numbers
of the players who would be appearing that afternoon. The action incensed League officials so much they made the clubs
change the numbers. Hence Melbourne captain John Beckwith wore No 1 instead of No 30, Ron Barassi wore No 2 instead of his trademark No 31 and wingman Brian Dixon became No 16 rather than No 9. Collingwood’s acting captain Murray Weideman changed from No 27 to No 1, full-forward Ian Brewer wore No 5 instead of No 6 and Kevin Rose discarded No 48 in favor of No 15.
The one exception to the alterations was Collingwood’s Ray Gabelich who retained No 13 because there was not another
jumper big enough to cover his enormous bulk.
