Synopsis
‘A Family Saga-Footsteps of our Soldiers’ is the second book I have written about the Herrick family who emigrated from Ireland in 1851. My first book was called ‘Herrick Pioneers’.
I have written this one in two parts:
Part one ‘A Family Saga’ focuses on my great grandparents James and Kate, and reveals how I expanded my research using the newspapers to include the names of Herrick individuals reported time and again in articles in the mid to late 1800s. Seeing their names in print and also where they lived made the true stories much more realistic.
The McNeills, the family of great grandmother Catherine were, at first, quite a mystery to me. But as their story unravels they become more relevant in our history.
Part Two ‘Footsteps of our soldiers’ consists of eight separate tales about the children born to my great grandparents and the significant role played by each of them. Some men fought for our country and some supported us at home. A photograph in a Melbourne newspaper has been handed around many interested members of the family for about twenty years. It shows five of my great uncles, four of whom enlisted to fight in WW1.
