Synopsis

Dating back to 1898, the Futurity Stakes is of more than passing interest in racing’s hall of fame. Among the roll call of champions of the turf to win one of Caulfield’s major races are Eurythmic, Phar Lap, Ajax, Bernborough, Todman, Aquanita, Wenona Girl, Gunsynd, Manikato, Schillaci and Niconero. Ajax won the race three years running and Manikato won four times with a second place in between. The race was first run as a handicap over seven furlongs, but the next year became a weight for age event with allowances and penalties. This system meant there was often a huge gap between the lightly weighted and those carrying a sizeable impost. Some horses, among them Eurythmic in 1922, Phar Lap in 1931, Ajax in 1939 and 1940, Bernborough in 1946 and Aquanita in 1962 scorned their penalty, which added to the race’s intrigue.
