Among the roll call of champions of the turf to win one of Caulfield’s major races are Eurythmic, Phar Lap, Ajax, Bernborough, Todman, Aquanita, Wenona Girl, Gunsynd, Manikato, Schillaci and Niconero. Ajax won the race three years running and Manikato won four times with a second place in between. The race was first run as a handicap over seven furlongs, but the next year became a weight for age event with allowances and penalties. This system meant there was often a huge gap between the lightly weighted and those carrying a sizeable impost.
