Synopsis

There are different ways of looking at a drawn game. In a sense they mean nothing because neither of the participants has won although neither has lost. Depending on the standing of the respective clubs a draw could carry some importance one way or another. The divided points may be enough to scramble into the finals or cause missing a place. Fitzroy drew with Melbourne at the MCG in the second half of season 1959 and did the same in 1961. Both resulted in the Lions finishing fifth, out of the final four by half a game. An extra behind would have made them finalists in both instances.
Of the three drawn League football Grand Finals, two involved Collingwood. The Magpies lost the replay against North Melbourne in 1976, but won the replay against St Kilda in 2010. The League then changed the rules, allowing for playing extra time in the event of a drawn Grand Final.
At the finish of season 2025, the 129th in League history, Essendon had played 37 draws, followed by Carlton with 35, Collingwood 30 and St Kilda 27.
