Synopsis
JOHN Cain, whose father John served as Premier of Victoria for four days in 1943, for two years from November 1945 to November 1947 and from December 17, 1952 until June 7, 1955, emulated that achievement by holding the same office from 1982-90. Born in Melbourne on April 26, 1931, John Cain junior was educated at Bell State School, Northcote High School, Scotch College and finally the University of Melbourne before becoming a barrister and solicitor. He then entered politics as the Member for Bundoora in the Legislative Assembly. Along the way he briefly worked for the Victorian Railways as a lad porter at Chelsea station between his school and university days, about 1950. ``I used to sell tickets, sweep the platform and clean the toilets,’’ he told this writer at Ballarat station on the day he launched the Labor Party’s  Ballarat regional policy on February 5, 1985 preparatory to a state election.
