Synopsis
SOMETIME in the late 1960s this writer was on a Broadmeadows train, probably to cover a League
football match at Essendon. A young girl of about 12, accompanied by two younger siblings, entered the
carriage at Flinders Street station and asked the nearest person: ``Where does this train go?’’ A man looked up from
whatever he was reading and answered in a word: ``Essendon.’’ An incredulous look came across the girl, who
then said in a most worried tone: ``It doesn’t go to Broadmeadows?’’ I was about to answer when someone closer
volunteered to say: ``It goes on to Broadmeadows after stopping at Essendon.’’ A look of the utmost relief crossed the
girl’s face.
