Synopsis
The Brunswick St Oval was home to Fitzroy cricket and football clubs for more than a century. A roomy tract of land was reserved in 1862 from which developed a cricket ground and the Edinburgh Gardens. At one stage a rifle range existed on the eastern side. A dispute with the Fitzroy Council in the 1880s led to the reduction of space for the sporting clubs and this eventually led to the football club leaving the ground in 1967. One notable aspect of the ground was the twin grandstands, built to the same design, for the cricket and football club in 1889 and 1906, respectively. At the time of this development the Brunswick St Oval was second only to the MCG in terms of amenities, but there was little change over the next 60 years and other grounds, notably St Kilda and Carlton, outstripped Fitzroy. The book recalls great days for the Fitzroy football and cricket teams at Brunswick St Oval and the various personalities who played there.
