Synopsis
One of Melbourne's earliest settlers, John Pascoe Fawkner, referred to Williamstown in the 1840s as 'the fishing village'. The title 'The Village', stuck and is sometimes used today. Port Melbourne supporters still call their team The Borough, a continuation of the early days when the club represented the Borough of Port Melbourne, despite it being elevated to a town in 1893 and a city in 1919. Hence the historic trappings of two of the oldest football clubs in Victoria have survived, as has the rivalry between the pair. The clubs have met more than 250 times, including the Grand Final in 1945, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1964 and 2011.It was in the mid-1950s that the rivalry was at its height and these clashes are given particular attention by the author. All matches from 1886 to 2014 are mentioned in the text along with the many personalities who took part.
