Synopsis
THEIR homes were at opposite ends of Albert Park Lake; South Melbourne at the north and St Kilda at the south. As neighbors in a football league their rivalry could be intense although only twice, in 1913 and 1970, did they meet in a final. From 1938-64 before St Kilda shifted to Moorabbin in 1965, the two clubs competed for the Lake Pennant to add interest to their competitiveness. Perhaps of even greater significance was South’s record against the Saints. In its 85 years as a member of the Victorian Football League, South Melbourne defeated St Kilda 100 times which far exceeded its success against other opponents; 78 wins against Melbourne being its next best effort.

Of the many players who appeared with South Melbourne and St Kilda, Roy Cazaly played with both clubs. By coincidence he turned out 99 times with each and was recognised as one of the game’s finest players. Later a song was written in his honor. Dave McNamara, one of the best players in St Kilda’s history, could have joined South in 1905 but the Southerners let the opportunity slip because it was late in the season and they preferred not to alter their team.

South Melbourne and St Kilda eventually met in 154 League games, with the Swans winning 100 to the Saints 52. The other two games were drawn. Earlier the pair had played 14 times under the Victorian Football Association banner; South winning 11 times to St Kilda two with one draw.
