Synopsis
T
RAVELLING by bus from Atlanta to New Orleans on November 23, 1970 this writer was joined by a fellow traveller between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A talkative individual, he was inclined to complain before asking me where I was going. ``New Orleans,’’ I replied. ``Is New Orleans home for you?’’ he asked. ``No, I’m from Melbourne, Australia,’’ I explained. On learning I was a visitor to his country, his attitude changed to one of friendliness. One of the first things he told me was he had twice sailed into Sydney Harbor at night during World War II but on each occasion had sailed out before dawn. I commiserated with him, saying I felt sorry because of the splendid sight he had missed. On leaving the bus he shook hands with me, wished me well and left me with a fascinating story that stays in my memory.

Also still in my memory is an unforgettable sight at Circular Quay of the sailing ships that were brought to Sydney for the Captain Cook bi-centenary celebrations in April 1970. On Sunday, April 26, crowds lined vantage points along the harbor from Watsons Bay to Circular Quay to watch the Indonesian barquentine Dewarutji and the Argentine Navy square-rigged training ship Libertad sail towards their destination. The next day the Chilean Navy’s barquentine Esmerelda and Endeavour II, a Canadian replica of Captain Cook’s Endeavour, arrived to take part in the celebrations.
